Our Story...
Just before Travis turned 2, we found out that he was allergic to peanuts. For those of you who don't know, a peanut allergy almost always causes a person to go into anaphylactic shock. We were lucky that Travis made it to the hospital in time to reverse this effect. It was at that moment that we realized our lives would be changed forever. Having a child with a peanut allergy puts you on guard 24/7. Reading labels has become second nature for us. Travis is now 4 years old and will be attending pre-school in the fall. We have taught him not to share food, to always wash his hands before he eats, the importance of keeping his hands away from his face when in public places (this one isn't easy) , and to ALWAYS have his epipen. Travis now asks if we have the epipen before we go anywhere. I am shocked that some people still believe that if a peanut allergic child ingests even a peanut particle they might just get itchy. This is not the case. It is very likely that full blown anaphylaxis will occur. If everyone who reads this would educate as many people as they can about peanut allergies, it would make life just a little bit easier for Travis and so many other children with this deadly allergy.
We are fortunate to have the support of our family and friends who have taken the time to understand his allergy and go out of their way to keep him safe. Thank you!
